Research My research interests are focused around understanding plankton variability in time and space, especially on relatively large scales: intra-seasonal, seasonal and interannual time scales and shelf to ocean basin spatial scales. Why are some regions more productive than others? Do these differences remain stable from season to season and from year to year? Do seasonal cycles change from year to year? In what manner? Are trends quantifiable? Can we identify and quantify the primary mechanisms driving temporal variability and geographic differences? Answers to these questions let us start to address the second group of questions of interest to me: dominant modes and causes of interannual variability, its links to climate change and the spatial footprint of its intensity or impact.
Teaching The courses I most regularly teach:
-undergrad level, SMS 302 (Oceanography), a Junior level introductory course, part of the SMS core program
-graduate level, SMS 540 (Satellite Oceanography), self explanatory... but taught from an applications perspective, rather than theory/engineering
-training, groups of undergraduates in MATLAB
Personal Interests Swimming! Go fast, go hard, or go home! I've been a competitive swimmer for ~ 45 years, my favorite sport! Hiking and backpacking: nowhere I’d rather be than outside in the backcountry (heck, even in winter). Past addictions: Windsurfing! (you're never cured, you're always just 1 session away from a full relapse). White water kayaking: too hard on the shoulders, had to stop (see swimming, above). Good wine, good beer and good food!
